And youre always free to walk up the hill, but fewer people do, and so, at scale, at societys scale, you really are just tilting the floor and changing what billions of people think and do. And that pattern points to social media. When I was at the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab, this is what we learned. In Myanmar, when people think of the Internet, what they are thinking about is Facebook. And weve lost sight of it because it became the cool thing to do, as opposed to the right thing to do. [Justin Rosenstein] I was the coinventor of Google Drive, Gmail Chat, Facebook Pages, and the Facebook like button. [Tristan] They know when people are lonely. 2. Its just that this is what the recommendation system is doing. I feel like were headed toward dystopia. We are standing up, and we are we are standing up to this noise. [reporter 2] Its exacerbated by the fact that you can literally isolate yourself now in a bubble, thanks to our technology. Pull back on friends and family. Can you imagine that? [Roger] The way to think about it is its 2.7 billion Truman Shows. One of the most worrying effects of social media, as outlined in The Social Dilemma, is its negative impact on our body image. We share our review of the film from our perspectives as tech workers and consumers of social media. And no one really understands what theyre doing in order to achieve that goal. Thats where the term machine learning comes from. I dont know if I feel that way anymore. You tax these companies on the data assets that they have. It also shows, fairly accurately, how platforms harvest personal data to target users with ads - and have so far gone largely unregulated.
